Mind Your Business: Supporting Clients in Understanding Their Right to Privacy When Receiving Substance Use Treatment

Peer Recovery Support Specialists have a unique role in assisting individuals through the recovery process, through shared lived-experience and mutual empowerment. Peers help people become, and stay engaged, in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of reoccurrence.

The CoE-PHI is facilitating a virtual training workshop, specifically designed for Peer Recovery Specialists. This learning opportunity will assist peers in building their communication skills to prepare for having important conversations with clients around concepts of the privacy of their substance use treatment information and consent to share information, in a way that is meaningful, relatable and helpful to clients.

During this training, we’ll discuss and model key communication skills including introducing concepts of privacy, asking for permission, providing education, reflective listening, and checking in with your client. Additionally, we’ll provide resources to support the implementation of this process for both your role and within your organization.

CoE-PHI has based the content for this skill building training on the most up-to-date and currently available health privacy regulations, and available HHS guidance regarding health information privacy as it relates to substance use and behavioral health treatment.

Objectives

• Identify core concepts associated with protecting health information
• Examine key communication skills necessary for providing clients with information about concepts of privacy and consent to share information
• Discuss the challenges and benefits of providing this information to clients
• Practice providing information to clients regarding concepts of privacy and consent to share information

Who Should Attend

This training is specifically designed for Peer Recovery Support Specialists to assist in building their communication skills and capacity to discuss concepts of privacy and consent to share information. However, this training is applicable to many roles in the treatment setting such as community health workers and other supportive service staff.
