Navigating Privacy Laws for School Nurses
Virtual Anytime Session – National Association of School Nurses Conference

The Center of Excellence for Protected Health Information (CoE-PHI) is hosting a 60-minute asynchronous presentation during the NASN Annual Conference that will assist nurses working in K-12 schools in understanding and applying federal and state privacy laws that apply to student behavioral health information and educational records.
This session will be open from Monday, July 7, 2025 through Friday, October 10, 2025 and can be taken at your own time. In order to view the session you must register for the conference.
It’s crucial that nurses working within school settings have the information and skills they need to understand privacy regulations related to student information and how to apply them, in order to ensure that students have access to BH treatment services. Nurses play a crucial role when it comes to recognizing and addressing student well-being.
By creating a strong network of school nurses that understand the federal and state privacy laws that impact their students, schools will be equipped to address students’ need for behavioral health services and improve student health outcomes.
Session objectives:
- Describe the privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA and State Law) that apply to student behavioral health information
- Explain how student behavioral health information can be protected and shared in compliance with privacy regulations
- Apply learning to scenarios involving student behavioral health information that commonly arise in school settings
- Explain how to access resources, on-demand learning, and technical assistance through the CoE-PHI
Who should attend:
School nurses and those who oversee them
