Partnering with Patients About Decisions to Consent to Share Treatment Information

Thursday October 30, 2025 — 1:00pm – 2:15pm EDT

Providers of substance use treatment services play a vital role in recovery, not only by delivering care, but by supporting patients in understanding their rights, and options related to the privacy of their treatment information.

The Center of Excellence for Protected Health Information (CoE-PHI) is facilitating two virtual trainings designed to help providers prepare for meaningful conversations with their patients around privacy, confidentiality, and navigating decisions about sharing their substance use treatment information.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify core concepts associated with protecting health information
  • Describe a stepwise approach for introducing and having conversations about consent to share information
  • Practice using the step-wise approach to having conversations about concepts of privacy and consent to share information

Who Should Attend

This training is for professionals working within substance use treatment settings, including:

  • Substance use treatment providers
  • Counselors and therapists
  • Clinical supervisors and program managers
  • Case managers

Additional Resources

The CoE-PHI has put together a series of resources to assist substance use treatment providers and peer support workers in having meaningful conversations with their patients or clients about the privacy of their treatment information. These resources will help you ensure that the people you provide services to have the information they need to make informed decisions.
