Sally Friedman, JD

Sally Friedman is the Vice President of Legal Advocacy at the Legal Action Center, a non-profit law and policy organization that fights discrimination against and protects the privacy rights of individuals with criminal justice histories, substance use disorders, and HIV/AIDS.

Since joining the Center in 1993, Sally has successfully litigated cases challenging employment, housing, and other discrimination against individuals with substance use disorders, HIV/AIDS, and criminal records.  Sally won Innovative Health Systems v. City of White Plains, a landmark case establishing that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits municipalities from using their zoning laws to exclude facilities serving individuals with disabilities. 

Sally is a national expert on the laws protecting the confidentiality of substance use disorder records.  She has advised and trained thousands of health care providers, attorneys, and government agencies about confidentiality, authored numerous publications, and created online and video-based courses.

Prior to joining the Legal Action Center, Sally worked as a litigation associate at the New York law firm of Kramer, Levin, Naftalis, Nessen, Kamin and Frankel.  She graduated cum laude from New York University School of Law, and phi beta kappa from Brown University.
